On the street during a photo shoot this week, I was asked a question that I have always wanted to ask other fashion bloggers, influencers, influencers and influencers, asked what do you influence? What does a fashion influencer do?.
“TO INFLUENCE OTHERS TO DO WHAT”
A Wikipedia definition of what a fashion influencer is.
“A fashion influencer is a personality that has a large number of followers on social media, creates mainly fashion content and has the power to influence the opinion and purchase behaviour of others with their recommendations”.
This statement has immediately impacted the way I feel about the word influencers, what am feeling when creating a blog post or writing an article about a topic that does come across as aggressive too sensitive to discuss.
What does a fashion influencer do?.
To which I responded in an awkward manner that I have never really considered myself as an influencer or anything else. Style blogger perhaps, how about we leave it at that?
A large number of followers on social platforms, I think not.
My point here is back in 2000 fashion bloggers mainly blogged as a hobby where style ideas and lifestyle topic where discussed. Since monetization and branding started, somehow the word influencer was carved out of nowhere.
I admit the digital landscape itself is evolving daily and It is imperative for changes to come in.
What is your opinion on the word “fashion influencer”?
Do you prefer to be called style blogger or fashion influencer?
